Waist and hip, separately
Neither gets squeezed to match the other.
Altr House
Babies grow fast and rarely match a size chart. ALTR HOUSE builds your custom baby pants sewing pattern from your baby's own waist, hip, and length, so it's a made-to-measure baby pants pattern, not a size you have to fix. Enter the numbers, choose pants or shorts, pick the length and fit, and download a sew-ready file in US Letter, A4, A0, or SVG.
Why a custom baby pants pattern?
Baby sizes are averages, and babies aren't. The waist is snug, the length is short, or the pair fits for a week. A custom baby pants sewing pattern starts from your baby's own numbers, so you sew the size they are today, not the closest one on a chart.
Neither gets squeezed to match the other.
Choose your hem before you generate. Nothing to chop off or add later.
Make a baby pants sewing pattern or a baby shorts sewing pattern from the same saved measurements.
Update the measurements, generate again, and sew the next size. They stay saved in Design Studio.
Side by side
| Standard Pattern | ALTR HOUSE Custom Pattern | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A graded size | Your baby's measurements |
| Waist and hip | Often blended or altered | Entered separately |
| Common fixes | Tight waist, wrong length | Fewer, since it starts from your numbers |
| Next size up | Buy or trace again | Generate again from updated measurements |
How it works
No drafting, no tracing. Your numbers do the work.
Fill in the fields the Baby Pants & Shorts base asks for and save them in Design Studio.
Pick pants or shorts, then the length and fit.
ALTR HOUSE builds the pattern from your numbers and choices.
Download US Letter, A4, A0, or SVG, then print or project it. Sew a test pair first.
What to measure
Use the on-screen guide in the generator as you go. Measure over a thin layer or a diaper, keep the tape snug but not tight, and keep your baby comfortable.
In the Baby Pants & Shorts base
Length changes everything. Pants can run to the ankle and shorts can sit above the knee. Think about the season and about how long you want them to last.
Fabric for baby pants
Baby skin is sensitive and little legs move constantly, so comfort comes before everything else. Look for soft, breathable fabric that's gentle on the skin and easy to wash.
Cotton jersey: Soft, breathable, and easy to sew. A popular everyday choice.
French terry: Cozy and stable, good for cooler days.
Rib knit: Very stretchy and comfortable, good for waistbands and cuffs.
Muslin or double gauze: Light and airy for warm weather, though it creases and can shrink.
Be careful with: Scratchy, stiff, or heavily textured fabrics, and anything that frays or sheds easily.
Wash and dry the fabric before cutting, because small garments are less forgiving if they shrink. Then sew a test pair in something similar and check the waist and leg before you cut the good fabric.

Yes. You enter your baby's own measurements, and the Baby Pants & Shorts base builds the pattern from them. They stay saved in Design Studio so that you can reuse them later.
Yes. The pattern is generated from your baby's numbers, not a size row. If your baby grows, update the measurements and generate again. How often you can do that depends on your plan, so see pricing.
Two things: waist and hip to ankle. Use a flexible tape over a thin layer or a diaper, and follow the guide next to each field.
Yes. You set the length before the pattern is generated, so it comes out at the length you chose. To try another length, generate again from your saved measurements.
Soft, breathable fabric that's easy to wash: cotton jersey, French terry, rib knit, or muslin for warm weather. Avoid scratchy or stiff fabrics, and pre-wash before cutting.
It starts from your baby's own measurements, so there's less altering. Waist and hip don't have to match a size row, the length is set before you cut, and you can resize easily as your baby grows.
The pros are a better fit, fewer alterations, and reusable measurements. The cons are that it relies on accurate measuring (which isn't easy with a baby), you still need a test pair, and you're limited to the options in the base.
Common ones are measuring over bulky clothes, forgetting room for a diaper, not pre-washing the fabric, using scratchy fabric, and skipping the test pair.
It's a good place to start. You skip drafting and sew from the downloaded file. A test pair is still smart the first time.
