Waist and hip, separately
Neither gets squeezed to match the other.
Altr House
Knit shorts only work if they stretch where you move and stay put where you don't. ALTR HOUSE builds your custom knit shorts sewing pattern from your own waist, hip, and length, so it's a made to measure shorts pattern, not a size you have to fix. Enter your numbers, pick the length and fit, and download a sew-ready file in US Letter, A4, A0, or SVG. French terry, jersey, or rib, the pattern starts from you.
Why a custom shorts pattern?
Standard sizes guess at your hip and waist. So the shorts ride up, pull across the hip, gape at the waistband, or stop at the wrong spot on your leg. A custom shorts sewing pattern starts from your own numbers. Because it's drafted for knit fabric, you also get shorts that stretch comfortably rather than strain.
Neither gets squeezed to match the other.
Your waist to hip distance is part of the pattern, so the fit sits where your body does.
Choose your hem before you generate. Nothing to chop off later.
It works as a women's knit shorts sewing pattern because it follows your measurements, not a size row. They stay saved in Design Studio for your next pair.
Side by side
| Standard pattern | ALTR HOUSE custom pattern | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A graded size | Your waist, hip, and length |
| Waist and hip | Often blended or altered | Entered separately |
| Common fixes | Tight hip, loose waist, wrong length | Fewer, since it starts from your numbers |
| Another pair | Buy or trace again | Generate again from saved measurements |
How it works
No drafting, no tracing. Your numbers do the work, so take them carefully.
Fill in the four fields the Knit Shorts base asks for and save them in Design Studio. Measure over thin clothing.
Choose the length and fit you want.
ALTR HOUSE builds the pattern from your numbers and choices.
Download US Letter, A4, A0, or SVG, then print or project it. Sew a test pair in a similar knit first.
What to measure
Use the on-screen guide in the generator as you go. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and stand naturally.
In the Knit Shorts base
Length changes the whole feel of a pair of shorts, from relaxed loungewear to something more fitted. Decide before you generate, and think about the fabric. A heavy terry hangs differently from a light jersey.
Best fabric for knit shorts
This base is drafted for knit, and with knits the stretch and recovery matter more than the fabric name. Recovery is how well the fabric springs back after stretching. Poor recovery gives you baggy knees and a waistband that sags by lunchtime.
French terry: soft, comfortable, and stable. A popular choice for everyday and lounge shorts.
Cotton jersey with a little elastane: light and easy to wear, and it holds its shape better than jersey without any stretch fibre.
Rib knit: very stretchy and close-fitting. It's good for snug shorts but can show every line.
Ponte or other stable double knits: firmer, with a smoother look, though less stretchy.
Be careful with: very thin, very drapey, or very loose knits. They can stretch out of shape or be hard to sew.
Sew a test pair in a similar knit before you cut the good fabric. Check how it stretches and springs back, then use the generator's measurement guide rather than adapting a woven pattern.
Included
Print at home on 8.5 × 11 paper, then tile and assemble. Set your printer to 100% scale, not "fit to page".
The same home-print routine, sized for A4.
A0 for a copy shop, or SVG for a projector or digital cutting. See the projector page to learn how it works.
Your measurements and patterns stay saved for next time.
Who it's for
There's no block to draft. Knits are forgiving, as long as you test first.
Save your measurements once, then generate shorter or longer pairs.
Enter them as they are. No more picking one size and fixing the other.
Start from your own numbers, not a pattern you have to rework.

Yes. You enter your own measurements and the Knit Shorts base builds the pattern from them. They stay saved in Design Studio, so you can reuse them for your next pair.
Measure your waist, hip, waist to hip, and shorts length with a flexible tape. Follow the guide next to each field, choose your length and fit, and generate the file. Then download it and sew.
Yes. You set the length before the pattern is generated. To try another length, generate again from your saved measurements. How often you can do that depends on your plan, so see pricing.
Look for a knit with good stretch and recovery. French terry, cotton jersey with a little elastane, and stable double knits are all popular. Very thin or very loose knits can stretch out of shape. Test in a similar fabric first.
It starts from your own waist, hip, and length, so there's less altering. Your waist and hip don't have to match a size row, the length is set before you cut, and your measurements are saved for the next pair.
The pros are a better fit, fewer alterations, and reusable measurements. The cons are that it relies on accurate measuring, you still need a test pair, and you're limited to the options in the Knit Shorts base. Home printing also means assembling pages.
The usual ones are using fabric with poor recovery, cutting with the stretch going the wrong way, pulling the fabric while sewing, using the wrong needle, and skipping the test pair. Measuring the waist too low is another.
Often the size doesn't match your waist-to-hip proportions, or the fabric doesn't have the right stretch. A custom pattern helps because waist and hip are entered separately. Re-measure carefully and sew a test pair.
It's a good place to start. You skip drafting and sew from the downloaded file. Knits behave differently from wovens, so a test pair is a smart first step.
Yes. It's built on your waist and hip, so it follows your own proportions.
