Two sizes, one skirt
Waist and hip are entered separately, so neither gets squeezed to match the other.
Altr House
A skirt has two jobs: sit right at your waist and move well over your hip. ALTR HOUSE builds your custom skirt sewing pattern from your own waist, hip, and length, so it's a made-to-measure skirt pattern, not a size you have to fix. Enter your numbers, pick the length and fit, and download a sew-ready file in US Letter, A4, A0, or SVG. Whether you're sewing in denim, linen, or a soft crepe, the pattern starts with you.
Why a custom skirt pattern?
Ready-made sizes assume one gap between your waist and hip. Most of us don't match it. So the waistband gapes, or the skirt pulls across the seat. A custom fit skirt pattern starts from your numbers, so you don't have to choose. The result is a skirt that fits the first time more often, which means less fabric wasted on fixes.
Waist and hip are entered separately, so neither gets squeezed to match the other.
Your waist-to-hip distance is part of the pattern, so the shaping follows your body.
Pick your length before you generate. Nothing to chop off afterward.
It works as a women's skirt sewing pattern because it follows your measurements, not a size row. They stay saved in Design Studio for your next skirt.
Side by side
| Standard pattern | ALTR HOUSE custom pattern | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A graded size | Your waist, hip, and length |
| Waist and hip | Often blended or altered | Entered separately |
| Common fixes | Waist gaping, tight hip, wrong hem | Fewer, since it starts from your numbers |
| Another skirt | Buy or trace again | Generate again from saved measurements |
How it works
No drafting, no tracing, no maths. The most important step is the first one, because the pattern is only as accurate as your numbers.
Add the four fields the Skirt base asks for and save them in Design Studio. Measure over thin clothing, not bulky layers.
Pick the length and fit you want.
ALTR HOUSE builds the pattern from your numbers and choices.
Download US Letter, A4, A0, or SVG, then print or project it. Cut a test in cheap fabric before the good stuff.
What to measure
You only need four. Use the on-screen guide in the generator as you go. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and stand naturally rather than pulling in your stomach.
In the Skirt base
Length changes the whole mood of a skirt, so it's worth deciding before you generate. Consider how you'll wear it, and which fabric you'll use, since a longer skirt in a heavy fabric hangs differently from a short one in a light fabric.
Fabric for a skirt
Fabric changes how a skirt hangs more than almost anything else. A crisp fabric holds the hem out and keeps its shape. A soft one skims the hip and moves with you. Here's a quick guide to the best fabrics for a skirt:
For structure: cotton twill, denim, linen, and medium-weight suiting hold their shape and suit a more tailored skirt.
For drape and movement: crepe, viscose, and soft rayon move well but can be slippery to cut.
For comfort and stretch: ponte, jersey, and French terry are forgiving, though stretch changes how snug the fit feels.
Fabrics to be careful with: very sheer, very stiff, or heavily textured fabrics are harder to cut and sew, and may need lining.
Sew a test in something similar before you cut the good stuff. Check the waist and hip first, then adjust using the generator's guide.
Included
Print at home on 8.5 × 11 paper, then tile and assemble. Check that your printer is set to 100% scale, not "fit to page".
The same home-print routine, sized for A4.
A0 for a copy shop, or SVG for a projector or digital cutting. See the projector page to learn how it works.
Your measurements and patterns stay saved for next time.
Who it's for
The shaping is already worked out, so there's no block to draft.
Save your measurements once, then generate a shorter or longer version.
Enter them as they are. No more fixing one to suit the other.
Start from your own numbers, not a pattern you have to rework.

Yes. You enter your own measurements, and the Skirt base builds the pattern from them. They stay saved in Design Studio, so you can reuse them for your next skirt.
Four things: waist, hip, waist to hip, and skirt length. Use a flexible tape and follow the guide next to each field.
Measure, enter the four numbers, choose your length and fit, and generate. Then download the file and sew. You never draft anything by hand.
It depends on the look. Cotton twill, denim, and linen give structure. Crepe and viscose give drape. Ponte and jersey are comfortable and forgiving. Whatever you choose, sew a test in a similar fabric first.
It starts from your own waist, hip, and length, so you spend less time altering. Your waist and hip don't have to match a size row, the hem is set before you cut, and your measurements are saved for the next skirt.
The pros are a better fit, fewer alterations, and reusable measurements. The cons are that it relies on accurate measuring, you still need a test garment, and you're limited to the options in the Skirt base. Home printing also means assembling pages.
The most common ones are:
Usually the pattern doesn't match your waist-to-hip proportions, or the measurements were taken loosely or too tightly. A custom pattern helps because waist and hip are entered separately. Measure again carefully, and sew a test to check.
Yes. You set the length before the pattern is generated. To try another length, generate again from your saved measurements. How often you can do that depends on your plan, so see pricing.
It's a good place to start. The shaping is done for you, and you sew from the downloaded file. A test garment is still smart the first time.
Download US Letter or A4, print at 100% scale, then tile and assemble the pages. Don't want to print at home? Take the A0 file to a copy shop.
Yes. Download the SVG for a projector or digital cutting setup. See the projector page.
Yes. It's built on your waist and hip, so it follows your own proportions.
Yes. The 7-day free trial doesn't need a credit card. Open the generator, choose the Skirt base, and make a pattern. Paid options start at $9 for one pattern, or you can choose a membership.
